Discovery

As far as jobs go, Nich definitely has an interesting one as a third year Emergency Physician Resident. Interesting as in, when I ask how his day was, I know he's going to have a funny or interesting story for me about someone who visited the emergency department that day, or something one of his co-workers said or did. We both found out a long time ago that each department in a hospital attracts a unique personality type which fits the demands of the job. So for example, surgeons are known for being highly competitive, type A, perfectionists that weed out anyone who isn't. Emergency docs are "dumb jocks"... and I say that in the most endearing way possible. They are goofy, have job-ADD (they need constant change in stimuli...writing for slight adjustments to medications on a daily basis to the same patients for days or weeks - think internal medicine doc - drive them crazy), and are highly-supportive of each other. "Scrubs" so got it right! Nich is definitely one of the goofy ones there, and at home, which is one of the things I adore about him.

Just a few of the stories I hear about are things like the night one of his attendings, suddenly speaking in a German accent, requested each person check out to him in a different accent (I'm pretty sure they all ended up being assortments of terrible Cockney accents...even the one trying to pull off a West-Texas accent), or the huge male radiology tech with (reportedly) gigantic arms who jokingly slams Nich against the walls of the hallway as he passes by (Nich's a pretty built guy himself) and thinks Nich is kidding when he whinces slightly in pain (fake strong-man competition between these two), or when a co-worker comes in late blaming "runner's runs" and everyone laughingly races to Wiki it to see if it's a real thing (diarrhea after running, and, yes, it's a real thing. And yes it was Nich), or a patient arriving at the emergency department because their feet became numb after sitting on the toilet too long.

Most of what I hear are these fun, light-hearted stories, but a few times a week I hear things that I don't know how he, and other doctors, handle. I liken emergency doctors to "first responders." While they don't do what firefighters and police officers do (also don't know how they do what they do), they are exposed to the gross, dark, and most painful sides of human life. You could't pay me enough to do what my husband does. Like the stories of him having to perform what I consider "icky" procedures on people (think disempacting poop), or trying to deal with psychotic people (like actually psychotic in the psychological way), he also has to deal with absolute heartbreak. He often is the person who has to tell a pregnant woman she has miscarried. Or tell someone they really need to go in for more testing because the current tests all point to a growth, possibly cancer. Or call CPS for finding semen in a toddler's urine. Somehow I always thought of emergency docs as going around heroically trying to save lives from crazy accidents and gunshots and heart attacks and a slow day would be broken arms, stitches and diagnosing appendicitis. From the ER shows I've watched on TV, I knew he would have to tell scared and hopeful families that their loved one died, and somehow I thought that would be the worst thing. It might still be the worst thing, but I didn't even think about the other tragedy my sweet, goofy husband has to deal with. I don't know how he, or other first-responders, keeps all that separate and can still come home happy, silly, and positive.

It takes a unique person to do that, day in and day out, to still absolutely LOVE their job, and still see more positive than negative in the world. As I have come to this realization in the past few weeks, I find 1. I only want to hear the funny stuff since I'm not able to compartmentalize like he can, 2. I see why there is such a comradery at his work and am absolutely greatful for that, and 3. I respect him even more...which I didn't know I could.

Dallas Aquarium

We took a day trip down to the Aquarium in Dallas since both boys love love love animals right now. This first guy is a shoe-bill, and Gammy's favorite bird. This one's for her! It's like the bird knew and was right at the front of the exhibit for us. And pardon Ian's awkward hand placement...the other picture we have in front of this magnificent bird, Ian's picking his nose and Oliver looks like he's about to fall asleep...

More critters - a tree kangaroo.

And monkeys eating each other's lice just feet away from us!

This was a very curious little guy. I enjoyed watching his pupils constantly change size as he focused on all the onlookers. Yes, I'm weird, but in my defense I have never claimed to be normal.

I think they're both eyeballing each other with the same thought.

And more critters

Brotherly love

Actually, they were hugging and ended up holding hands for the next several animals. Totally melts my heart!

Now we're getting to the underwater life!

LUNCH!!! Oliver's ready!

Ian?

Ian? You look a wee bit sleepy.

And literally 10 seconds later...

Love!

We finished lunch and continued to the tunnels of fish!

And this guy

SHARK tunnel!

Ian's still sleeping, now on Nich's far more comfy shoulder

The second he woke up he yelled "Fish! FISH!! FISH!!!" with lots of pointing. I think he woke up in his own personal heaven

Kisses. These boys sure love each other. Again, heart melting here

My totally handsome husband checking out the man-eaters

YES!

And one of Oliver's favorite places

Penguins! And just something we noticed while hanging out with these little guys...they poop. I mean, a LOT. Like half their body weight is squirted out of their behinds each time. Very entertaining to a group of males, I have to say...

We think this turtle was trying to get closer to the heat lamp on this chilly day.

We had a marvelous adventure at the aquarium!

Super Halloween Brothers!

We started our Halloween 2013 with some pumpkin painting and chocolate chip cookie eating:

And Trunk or Treat with Gammy and Papabear. This year Oliver decided he and Ian needed to be the Super Mario Brothers. The old-school guys...plumbers! They seriously make the coolest, cutest Nintendo characters I've ever seen! Papabear went as a, well, bear. Last year he was a clown and scared all the kids (I think that's a little funny, but since he's bishop, it might not be too funny to everyone else). Here they are:

And Daisy was Dr Daisy. Again :) She really likes the costume - jumped around the house like a deer when we put it on her and then took a nap on it when we got home so I couldn't put it away for a while   Such a goofy doctor...must be an Emergency Physician.

Happy Halloween!
